ALBANY, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and nearly all prominent New York state Democrats, are coalescing around the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

"She is an extraordinarily impressive person and I not only believe she's going to be president, I believe she's going to be a great president," said Cuomo, D-New York.

The most prominent supporter and increasingly visible New York surrogate for Clinton's presidential bid has been Cuomo, who in recent weeks has touted her candidacy and criticized her rivals, including attacking Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for his stance on gun control.

"I think, especially when you look at the field of candidates that are out there, I don't think it's even a close choice," Cuomo said.

The full-throated endorsement for Clinton comes after a summer in which Cuomo made multiple public appearances with Vice President Joe Biden. In September, Cuomo spoke warmly of a potential Biden presidential campaign that never got off the ground.

Cuomo is now boosting Clinton's campaign, introducing her husband, former President Bill Clinton, at a birthday fundraiser on Sunday where sources said the governor praised her performanced in a recent debate and knocked Republicans over the investigation into the Benghazi terrorist attack.

"I am on board. I have been on board from day one. Anything I can do I will. Anyway I can help the campaign I will," said Cuomo.

Not everyone in New York has been as vocal as Cuomo: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has feuded with Cuomo, is yet to endorse Clinton. Both the mayor and a governor have a shared history of working for Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The support doesn't stop at the state level. On Tuesday, Clinton picked up the endorsement from Democrats in her adopted home county of Westchester.
