Cobleskill Police say one of their cruisers hit and killed a pedestrian Friday night while chasing a speeding car.

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Gerard Roldan III of Cobleskill.

Police told Spectrum News two cruisers were going after a reckless driver on East Main Street — the driver was speeding and had run a red light — when Roldan stepped into the road and was hit by the lead police car.

It occurred around 10 p.m.

According to the department, both patrol vehicles stopped and officers administered CPR. They called it an "unavoidable" accident.

Roldan would later succumb to his injuries at the Cobleskill Regional Hospital Emergency Room.

Friends of the victim told Spectrum News he was walking to McDonald's to pick up his book bag from a friend. He was in the process of applying to work at the fast food chain, but was currently employed at a Oneonta Taco Bell.

"All I know is he was at my brother's house [then] he walked from my brother's house straight to McDonald’s; a two minute walk," said Brianna Meyers, a friend of Roldan.

Meyers also captured footage of what appeared to be the cruiser that hit Roldan.

Police said the officer who was at the wheel was screened and cleared for alcohol, and submitted a voluntary blood sample for a drug screen — the officer was also placed on administrative leave.

As New York State Police and the Schoharie County District Attorney's Office continue their investigation, friends continue to show up to the scene in complete shock.

“Doing the best we can. [It is] hard to believe it was him; [in] two seconds anything can happen,” said Meyers.

Cobleskill Police pointed out it rained Friday night and the roads were slick.

A vigil was held Saturday a few feet from where Roldan was killed.

“When they said unknown pedestrian, he’s not unknown; he’s so known everyone around here knows him," said Meyers.
