There is no word on what caused a late night fire in Menands.

Fire crews were called to the Wolfort Apartments on North Pearl Street just after 10 p.m. Thursday for heavy smoke and flames.

Several surrounding fire departments responded and the fire was under control in about a half hour.

A resident says he saw smoke outside his apartment, called 911, and alerted other tenants.

"As soon as I knock on the door, I told them there was fire.  I keep knocking. I got out of the building myself," one resident said.

"The whole building has heavy black soot and heat damage to the entire building,” said Richard Hack, the Colonie fire coordinator.

The fire chief says everyone got out safely, and firefighters were even able to save a small dog from one apartment.

One firefighter has a minor hand injury and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
