In an effort to keep school children safe, law enforcement in Washington County are increasing patrols along bus routes.

Washington County Sheriff Jeff Murphy announced earlier this week that his deputies will increase patrols in school zones and along bus routes.

Administrators at various schools across the county have reported common violations, including motorists illegally driving around buses that have their red lights on while they're picking up and dropping off students.

School leaders are hopeful the increased presence of law enforcement will serve as a friendly reminder.

“Our kids are very safe when they are on the bus, we train them about bus safety and we train our drivers and our buses are checked on a regular basis but when they step off, we have to make sure they are safe too,” said Hudson Falls Superintendent Linda Goewey.

No tickets were given on Wednesday's first patrol in Fort Ann.
