A multi-million dollar effort to revamp Schenectady’s Hamilton Hill community is finally coming to fruition.

Tuesday, elected officials and community leaders cut the ribbon on a $22 million development, combining nearly 60 apartments and a community service facility.

According to the state’s homes and community renewal, the new development called Hillside View Apartments is the product of a rehab project of the historic Horace Mann and St. Columba Schools.

The project is part of the state's five-year, $20 billion housing plan to make housing affordable and decrease homelessness.

“Renovation of buildings really anywhere is a labor of love and really hard work. These projects take an enormous number of years waiting to get approvals from not just financing agencies but historic agencies," said Ruthanne Visnauskas, commissioner for New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

"We're really thrilled to be here so many years later and see people begin to live here."

Tuesday’s ribbon cutting follows Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement of a $3 million award toward a new Boys and Girls Club, which will also be constructed in Hamilton Hills.
