9 month old Emma has been battling ewing sarcoma since she was six weeks old.

Her latest treatment brought her to Albany Med, where she continues to receive chemotherapy.

“She’s awesome,” said Jessica Jackstadt, Emma’s mother. “She’s taught us a lot on this journey. She’s a fighter. You wouldn’t tell anything is wrong.”

While the battle can be tough and scary at times, events like this help make the journey a little easier.

On Friday, Emma was one of several kids from the Bernard and Millie Duker Children's hospital taking part in Spirit Halloween's annual party.

“Even for me,” said Jessica. “It gives me a break to let her see new sites instead of the just sitting in the hospital room.”

“Just because you’re in the hospital, doesn’t mean that you’re still not a kid,” said Spirit Halloween District Manager Tata-Marie Coyne.

Coyne knows first-hand the importance of this children's hospital.

“When my son was seven, he ended up in Albany Med because, long story short, he need immediate brain surgery,” said Coyne.

Because of that experience, Coyne is now doing her part, making sure these children have one less thing to worry about this Halloween.

Now in its 12th year, the Spirit of children program has raised nearly $335,000.

“I’m super grateful to be able to give back to the place that helped my son as much as they did,” said Coyne.

As for Emma, she has six treatments left. Her mother hopes to be done by January.
