A former State Supreme Court Justice for New York's 9th Judicial District, John McGuirk, has died.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus confirms McGuirk died Thursday at the age of 76. The county notes McGuirk was elected to the court in the year 2000, and served for more than a decade.

It came after his time on Orange County Family Court in the 1990s. Neuhaus called McGuirk an Orange County legend, and said he, "served residents with class, compassion and dignity,” in a statement. “Most importantly, he never forgot where he came from, treating every person he met with the utmost respect. His loss is monumental but his legacy will endure for many years to come."

State legislators adopted a resolution honoring McGuirk earlier this year.
