ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany police say an officer fired two shots at 19-year-old Ellazar Williams last Monday on Elk Street.
According to Alice Green, of the Center for Law and Justice, a police report claims those shots were fired after Williams displayed a knife and was moving toward police.
“It’s hard to draw any conclusions because there were no body cameras and they have not completed their investigation,” Green said.
She says the report identifies Detective James Olsen as the one who fired the shots. But police won't say where Williams was shot or how many times.
Detectives Lawrence Heid, Christopher Cornell and Olsen were all pursuing Williams when the shots were fired. Police say the shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. after police responded to a call for a fight on Central Avenue with reports of a handgun.
According to police, officers found a knife on the scene that they believed belonged to Williams.
“Right now the police department is not giving out any details about that incident, in terms of what the distance was and where he was shot,” Green said.
She and other community members met with Acting Police Chief Mike Basile on Monday. The same day, Williams was arraigned with menacing a police officer and possession of a weapon.
Green says she also visited Williams over the weekend at Albany Medical Center. According to Green, he has a bullet lodged in his spine and is paralyzed from the waist down.
Police say they're in process of wrapping up their investigation. There is no word yet on when those details will be made available.
