MOREAU, N.Y. -- A group of property owners have given the Town of Moreau the green light to move forward on creating a sewer district for a section of Route 9.

The $16 million project will provide sewer lines to commercial properties between Exit 17 and just south of Butler Road.

The project passed 32 to 29. It'll bringing 31,000 linear feet of gravity sewers and 27,000 linear feet of force main to the commercial corridor.

But the project raises concerns for some that live on that stretch of Route 9. They say the sewer lines will be too much on their taxes.

David Deeb is a property owner and was one of about 80 eligible voters.

“We do have to grow here in Moreau," Deeb said. "But I do feel sorry for properties owners that are going to be burdened that are residents but they’re commercial properties.”

The town has applied for $4 million in grants to cover some of the cost. The remaining $12 million will be borrowed with no interest.
