COLONIE, N.Y. — An off-duty Albany County sheriff's deputy shot a pit bull who police say attacked his K9 partner Thursday.

Police say the pair were walking with a neighbor and their dog in the area of Prince Court when a pit bull charged from a house and attacked the neighbor's dog, then the deputy's service dog.

The K9 handler fired two shots at the pit bull, hitting the dog once.

It was taken to an area vet, while the police service dog will be treated for a torn ear.
