When you made your run to Dunkin' Donuts Friday morning, you might have seen something unusual if you looked up at the roof - officers with local police departments.

There were "cops on top" at 14 of the chain's locations throughout the Capital Region. We caught up with officers from the Albany Police Department, at the Dunkin Donuts on Washington Ave near the U-Albany campus.

The event is an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics New York. Anyone who stopped by and donated got a coupon for a free donut as a thank you. But officers say, it's really about the raising money for a worthy cause.

"We've been planning a lot this week, and trying to get the word out and the message out to people.  So, you're going to be getting your coffee anyway,  so stop by here and give a couple bucks to the special olympics and start your Friday off right," said Steve Smith, spokesman for the Albany Police Department.

"The money raised today is going to enhance and expand our sports programming, and in turn it will provide more life changing opportunities for the athletes of the Capital Region and Special Olympics NY," said Jennifer Frame, Director of Development for Special Olympics New York.

If you missed Cops on Top this year, you can still donate on the Special Olympics website.

Cops on Top has raised $30,000 since it began in 2015.
