An Albany County assistant district attorney accused of working on criminal cases beyond his duties with the county has now resigned.

This investigation comes amid reports that Steven Sharp was doing freelance work on a number of big cases — and while they weren't Albany County cases, the issue raised concerns about conflict of interests and violated a policy of district attorney's office.

Sharp was suspended earlier this week while the DA's office looked into the matter.

The district attorney confirmed Sharp was working with Cheryl Coleman on high-profile cases like that of Alex West, who was convicted of boating drunk and causing a crash that killed an 8-year-old.

This is raising clear concerns as Sharp was actually the prosecution against Coleman's defense in the courtroom including in the double murder trial of Edward Mero.

District Attorney David Soares' office confirms he asked for and accepted Sharp's resignation.

In a statement, the DA's office said, “An internal review verified that Sharp performed outside criminal law work on a transactional basis without permission in violation of office policy.”
