The launch of the 'Take Me Home' program comes just days after the body of missing Waterford teen Anthony Blaauboer, who had autism, was found in the Mohawk River.

The program, part of Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s Autism Action Plan for New York, is designed to help finding missing children and adults with autism or Alzheimer’s, or even diabetes.

Santabarbara and the Amsterdam Police Department are teaming up and launching a database that will ultimately help police respond to people in an emergency and who may need special assistance.

The database includes a current digital picture, demographic info and caregiver contact info.

If someone’s missing, it gives the police department quick accessibility in finding that person.

“A lot of time, people wander off on the snow and when it’s that cold out you got to find people immediately and sometimes you can walk by somebody and not know it’s the missing person," said Santabarbara. "But for the officers to say, ‘Yes we saw this picture, there he is, now we can begin the process to approach this person and get them back home safely.’"

Anyone who wants to register a family member in the program can fill out an application on the Amsterdam City Government website.
