It’s a plan that’s been discussed for a decade -- and almost 60 years after the construction of the Northway, it’s happening.

More than $90 million in upgrades are coming to Albany International Airport, and the Northway exit that gets you there.

Construction focuses on three areas: updated terminals, improved parking and changes to traffic flow. They’re reconfiguring Exit 4, adding a flyover ramp to avoid Wolf Road.

"It’s going to relieve congestion tremendously on Wolf Road and the Old Wolf Road and Albany Shaker Road," said NYDOT Assistant Commissioner Wahid Albert. "By the bridge over Albany Shaker Road, that’s going to relieve a lot of congestion."

Construction at the airport is set to begin in September, with work on the Northway beginning in October. The goal is to have all the work completed by November 2020.
