AUSTIN, Texas -- Trinity Abundant Life Church held its tenth annual Back to School Haircut Event on Sunday.

"It feels amazing it feels like your world has been opened up to you," said incoming senior Matthew Kirby.

Kirby's feeling is what Trinity Abundant Life Church hopes to give to every student at the 10th annual Back to School Haircut event. Organizer Marina Ortiz said she wants kids that attend to feel their best on the first day of school.

"We feel good about ourselves when we get a haircut. For us to give back to the community as well as to make smiles on these children’s faces and to help the parents that have multiple kids, it makes us feel good,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz started the event at her church with only four hairstylists looking to make a difference. That was the type of attitude that made this event fit it right in at Trinity.

"If we can be an arm, a leg, something just to be able to help out in the community, than we’re just doing really what the church was called to do," Trinity Pastor Mike Pecina said.

The church provides some of the biggest back to school necessities. School supplies, back packs, and a food pantry are available to anybody in the community, no questions asked.

"It’s not only for underprivileged you know it’s for everybody," Ortiz said. "If you need a  haircut and you’re in the area, come get it, if you need a backpack come get it, we’re not asking questions, we’re not searching for anything, we’re here to help and that’s what we’re all here for."

Last year over 500 people attended the event, too many to fit into the church sanctuary. This year it moved to the South Austin Recreation Center, and they say, it could get even bigger.

"I’m sitting back and I’m thinking next year we need the Frank Erwin center, you know, we need something bigger," Ortiz said

The church hopes to spread the event to even more kids around Austin.
