Hundreds of people will have to look for new jobs. General Electric is laying off 200 hourly employees.

The reasons, according to a spokesperson, are a 45 percent decline in volume in their Schenectady facilities and challenges facing the power industry.

Employees affected by this layoff come from the manufacturing and assembly sectors of General Electric.

In total, 225 positions are being eliminated, 25 of which were previously vacant jobs.

Tuesday morning Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy reacted to the news, saying:

“It’s always unfortunate, really hard on those individuals who are affected by this. GE reached out to me earlier, they’re doing the actual notifications of people this morning we want to work with them to see if there’s ways we can help transition during this period.”

According to GE, a transition plan is already in place for the employees being laid off. A spokesperson says they will be provided a severance package, which the company says includes support to new employment.
