Sen. Charles Schumer says a tariff on imported Canadian paper is causing huge problems for local businesses.

The Senate minority leader toured Quad/Graphics in Saratoga Springs on Thursday.

The company uses more than 330 million pounds of Canadian groundwood paper to print magazines and inserts each year.

Schumer says the U.S. Commerce Department imposed a tariff on the paper in January, which will result in prices climbing by almost 30 percent, costing Quad an extra $90 million a year.

Schumer says that would also devastate the newspaper industry, which employs more than 17,000 people in New York State.

"Tariffs are supposed to help jobs in America; this tariff hurts jobs in America, plain and simple,” Schumer (D) said.

"It's a tax that makes no sense and is causing us all sorts of challenges and our customers challenges,” said Joel Quadracci, Quad/Graphics chairman, president and CEO.

With the help of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who represents Wisconsin, the other state most impacted by this tariff, Schumer says he plans to meet with the U.S. commerce secretary and pressure him to eliminate this tariff before it becomes permanent next month.
