CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- As the sun continues shining, the ground is getting warmer. That could lead to several problems for your pet's paws.

If you walk your dog on a surface that's too warm, it can cause cracks and blisters on their paws. There are some tips to keep your dog from getting a sunburn.

  • Test the ground. If the pavement is too warm for your hand, it's going to be too hot for your pet.
  • Use a buffer. Either have your dog wear booties or socks, or have them walk on the grass.
  • Avoid the light. The ground tends to be cooler in the early morning or late night.

Luckily, if your dog does get a burn, there are ways to help ease the pain and help them heal.

"You can put it in water for about 10 minutes, cold water. Let it sit there for 10 minutes to help the burn, and then put aloe vera, Neosporin, anything like that," says Katie Shanahan, a dog groomer at Canine to Five.

You can also use baby sunscreen to make sure their nose doesn't burn.
