GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- At the corner of Washington Street and Bay Street is where state troopers and police officers from across New York and the northeast gathered on Friday to remember one of their own.

"This is a brotherhood and sisterhood who cared a lot about Chuck," said New York State Police Superintendent George Beach.

Retired State Police Sergeant Charles Salaway passed away Saturday from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He served with the state police for 27 years.

"He was a guy that was there for his guys but he also demanded professionalism and that they did their jobs," said Maj. Robert Patnaude, the commander of Troop G.

Salaway recently served as station commander in Wilton before retiring in October due to his illness. He is the second Troop G member to succumb to a 9/11-related illness this year.

"He died from an illness that was contracted because we asked him to serve in New York City," Beach said. "He serves as an example for them of bravery."

Salaway is survived by his wife and five children. He was 55.

"He's a good guy," Beach said. "He was a great guy, and he's certainly being missed by everyone."
