It's been almost five months since administrators in the Lake George School District announced the controversial decision to eliminate the vice principal position at the middle and high schools. As our Matt Hunter reports, lawyers on both sides of the issues met face to face for the first time on Wednesday.

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. – For the first time since a group of parents, teachers and community members sued the Lake George School District this past spring, the petitioners' lawyer met with the attorney representing the school on Wednesday morning.

“My clients were happy that we finally got that meeting today. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as fruitful as we were hoping for,” said Gregory Teresi, the attorney representing the petitioners.

With the meeting held behind closed doors inside the Warren County Supreme Court judge's chambers, lawyers were prevented from discussing the meat of the issue due to a potential conflict of interest involving some of the lawsuit's petitioners and employees at the court.

“The judge wanted us to go back to our clients and make a determination as to whether those issues are such that they would ask for a recusal from this bench and transfer the case to another bench,” Teresi said.

The group sued the school district after administrators announced in January that the middle and high school assistant principal position was being replaced by a K-12 curriculum director.

With issues like school shootings, bullying and drug use becoming more prevalent across the country, they're looking for an explanation for the decision.

"They want to know why they are going to eliminate the one person at that school who was in charge of trying to keep track of those students who are going through those issues,” Teresi said.

The attorney representing the school district declined an interview after leaving Wednesday’s conference. Superintendent Lynne Rutnik also chose not to comment.

“There is concern the decision was made by the school district arbitrarily, and I don’t know whether it was or it wasn’t, because they won’t meet with us," Teresi said.
