Advocates and community members joined elected officials at the capitol Wednesday, calling for several changes to the prison system.

Groups took to the Million Dollar Staircase to voice their concerns about several issues. They're calling for an end to long-term solitary confinement, changes to the bail system, and speedier trials. They want action from lawmakers and leadership on the issue from the governor.

They say the current system is unfair for minorities and people from lower-income backgrounds.

"There is no reason why anyone should be incarcerated until they have been proven guilty just because they can't afford to make bail," said Assemblyman David Weprin (D - Queens).

"But we need the support of our governor. It ends and begins with Governor Cuomo, and if he can help us get this legislation and this reform passed, then all is well," said advocate Thern Shivers.

The measure is unlikely to find support in the Senate but could have a better shot in the Assembly.
