A New York City man has drowned on Lake George, according to the village fire chief.

The kayaker, a 24-year-old from Manhattan, was found in 27-foot-deep water about 100 feet off shore Friday sometime before noon. According to the Warren County Sheriff's office, neither he nor his girlfriend were wearing life jackets when their kayaks capsized. The girlfriend was able to use her jacket as a flotation device and get back to shore safely. She is being treated in the hospital and is expected to recover.

The man's body was found by Lake George and North Queensbury Fire Department divers. An investigation is underway.

The man's name is being withheld pending notification, but authorities say he and his girlfriend were vacationing and had rented kayaks from their hotel in the village. They add the couple was provided with life jackets and a safety lesson.

"You hate to oversimplify a tragic matter like this. A family's lost a loved one, but people have to contribute to their own safety and make the right choices," said Lt. Steven Stockdale of the Warren County Sheriff's office. "This is a horrible thing for a family to face, and it didn't have to happen."
