The trial of a Troy man accused of killing a 1-year-old boy, baby Luca, is now underway.

David Bridges, 22, is accused of physically abusing a child who was left in his care in February 2017.

Police officers responded to a home on South Allen Street in Albany for an unresponsive child. The boy later died from his injuries.

Bridges is charged with murder, manslaughter and endangerment. He previously rejected a plea deal.

Earlier this year, the child's mother, Rebecca Patrick, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. She was Bridges' girlfriend at the time of her son's death.

During opening statements, Francisco Calderon, Bridges' attorney, told the jury his client might be "a horrible parent," but he's not a killer.

The first 3 witnesses to testify were at Bridges' apartment on 4 South Allen Street on February 6, 2017, the day Luca died. Two of those witnesses testified that they saw bruises on Luca, but nothing that would force them to call the police.

The third witness, a neighbor living in the same building as Bridges, testified that Bridges knocked on her door later that day, to wake her up, and told her Luca wasn't breathing.

She testified that the baby looked blueish-purple when she saw him.

A 911 call was made and that recording was played in the courtroom. You could hear Bridges yelling Luca's name several times. He tells the dispatcher he gave Luca CPR before paramedics arrived.
