ROTTERDAM, N.Y. — The inaugural Battle of the Badges charity softball game raised thousands of dollars that will go toward upgrades to Rotterdam Babe Ruth Memorial Park.

“That feeling of a being a kid and coming and watching people play ball playing ball yourself is the reason why we’re doing this," said Dan DeMarco, event organizer.

It was a Sunday afternoon full of nostalgia for Rotterdam’s finest and bravest.

“For a lot of us it’s been a lot of years to get out here and play softball again so it’s a lot of fun," said Lt. Jeff Collins, a Rotterdam police officer.

On one side, Lt. Collins and the Rotterdam Police Department. On the other, the Rotterdam Fire Department.

The inaugural event brought together the town’s law enforcement and firefighters to raise money for Rotterdam Babe Ruth Memorial Park.

“Painting, security for sure because just the other day they painted and tagged already, and it’s discouraging, they put a lot of hard work in here," said DeMarco.

Off the field, money is being raised through Dan Demarco’s website. If a team raised $500, they earned a run.

After seven innings, and a final score of 37-14, it was the Rotterdam Police Department holding up the trophy.

“This is our only field in town so we’re happy to be involved and keep the kids playing here," said Collins.
