ALBANY, N.Y. -- At a press conference Monday, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer told reporters that moving the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is the right thing to do.

But Monday's official opening of the new embassy has been met with backlash. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops in Gaza.

U.S. lawmakers have tiptoed around calling Jerusalem Israel's capital for years. Jerusalem is religiously important to Palestinians, especially after the 1967 war which gave Israel control of areas with large Palestinian populations.

While some lawmakers are supporting President Donald Trump's decision to move the embassy, others worry about the timing of its opening.
