CHATHAM, N.Y. -- There is no word on what started a fire at the Chatham Manor Apartment complex on Sunday that left one person dead.

The complex houses elderly and residents with disabilities.

The fire broke out around 8:30 Sunday morning. Several crews responded to the scene where there was heavy smoke and fire.

After knocking it down, first responders found a wheelchair-bound victim, 71-year-old Dennis O'Mara of Chatham, had been trapped inside. O'Mara died later Sunday night at the Westchester burn unit, according to the Chatham Fire Department.

One resident who lives upstairs described the chaotic scene.

"He was yelling and screaming for help for his electric wheelchair. The door was locked, window was shut; trying to break in, the windows were too hot to touch. You didn't want to have flash back,” said James Huff, a Chatham Manor resident.

Officials say eight apartments are unlivable because of the fire and those impacted have been relocated.
