A well-known Herkimer County attraction is undergoing some major renovations in the wake of tragedy.

The Herkimer Diamond Mines lost its main building in a fire last fall. The restored 1861 barn contained a registration area, jewelry store, museum and learning center.

Now construction is underway to replace what was lost—and they're calling it Miners' Village.

The village will have a Village Hall and cafe, along with a village store and schoolhouse. They will also be building a new barn to host children's STEM camps, festivals, weddings and other events.

"The whole village gives it a very organic, old fashioned theme and I think people are just going to roll up their sleeves and really learn a lot and have a lot of fun. And the most important thing, as we've always done, is to help them create those experiences and memories," said Renee Shevat, owner of the Herkimer Diamond Mines.

Officials say construction has been delayed because of Mother Nature, but they hope to have most of the work done by next month. The Miners' Village Grand Opening Celebration is scheduled for Father's Day Weekend.
