BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- NXIVM founder Keith Raniere will remain behind bars following an quick appearance in federal court in Brooklyn on Friday.

No bail was set as the 57-year-old was placed on permanent order of detention by court.

"We are looking forward to swift resolution," said Marc Agnifilo, Raniere's attorney. "We’re not waiving any speedy trial time. We don’t think the government can prove this. We look forward to our day in court."

Raniere's defense team says he denies the allegations and is very willing to fight for his innocence. He is charged with sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy in connection with a federal complaint claiming sex, slavery and branding were all part of a secret society within NXIVM.

"Defense strategy is many of the allegations, even if true, don't make out federal charges," Agnifilo said. "We think Mr. Raniere is innocent. We don't think there's any non-consensual criminal conduct."

Also in the courtroom Friday were former NXIVM member Toni Natalie and Catherine Oxenberg. She says her daughter is a victim of Raniere and is still a part of NXIVM.

"He is where he deserves to be: behind bars for the rest of his life," Oxenberg said.

In a letter filed by the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York, federal prosecutors argued Raniere poses a danger to the community and is a flight risk.

Federal prosecutors allege in the 1980s and 1990s, Raniere had repeated sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl and also had regular sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl. They also claim Raniere has access to a bank account with more than $8 million and a private island in Fiji.

"No one has ever heard the rest of the story and the other side of what has happened," said Paul DerOhannesian, Raniere's attorney. "I think this case is going to give us an opportunity to explain a lot more than the public has heard."

Raniere is due back in court later this month. A preliminary hearing is set for April 27 at 11 a.m.
