WILTON, N.Y. -- It was busy night Tuesday for hazmat crews in Wilton.

Around 8 p.m., the sheriff's office and fire crews were called to 4300 Route 50 for a reported chemical odor inside a lab.

Concerned that the chemical could be flammable, fire crews immediately called hazmat teams.

A couple workers were briefly checked out and released.

"They were stating the fans weren't working but we found the fans were working. We didn’t find any issues within the structure once the hazmat team made entry. Everything was fine on their meters we really didn't find anything," said Wilton Fire Chief Scott Brackett.

Route 50 was shutdown in both directions for a couple hours, and a nearby church was evacuated as a precaution.

So far there is no word yet on what caused the smell.
