VALLEY FALLS, N.Y. -- An explosive weekend fire at a Valley Falls garage remains under investigation Monday.

Hoosick Valley Fire Chief Mark Sheline says the fire started in a garage on Tomhannock Road early Sunday afternoon.

Crews had to get water from a nearby creek and the Tomhannock Reservoir in order to get flames under control.

The chief says as firefighters battled the blaze -- multiple propane and gas tanks exploded in the garage and a second nearby building that stores hay caught fire.

Weather also factored into how crews fought the fire.

"Wind played a huge factor today, along with the close proximity of both buildings. There’s only about 4 feet between the original structure and the secondary structure," Sheline said.

The chief says more than 10 departments and 50 to 60 firefighters were on the scene.
