COEYMANS, N.Y. -- More than a week after a video went viral showing Coeymans police cars chasing down and running over a rabid raccoon, residents are continuing to show their displeasure with how the situation was handled.

"If you or I did this to any animal, we would be arrested," said Daniel Boomer, a Coeymans resident.

He was one of those that spoke out during a Coeymans town board meeting Thursday night.

The situation unfolded last Monday morning at Faith Plaza. Some residents say police should have used a more humane strategy.

"There were far more merciful and ethical ways of treating this animal," said Harold Vadney, a New Baltimore resident.

Police say the animal would have been shot in normal protocol, but that was determined to be unsafe in a crowded parking lot. The town also does not have an animal control officer.

"We didn't like what we saw on the video either," said Coeymans Town Supervisor Philip Crandall. "The police were caught between a rock and a hard place. It was a tough situation."

He says the incident is being investigated by the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Albany County District Attorney's office. Once the investigations are complete, he says appropriate actions will be taken.

"We're going to implement steps after the investigation together with Sheriff Apple, and we're going to come together with the DEC, and we're going to come up with a solution for this," Crandall said.

In the meantime, Crandall says changes have already been made. Moving forward, he says DEC animal control will be contacted, not police, if a similar situation presents itself in the future.
