WESTERLO, N.Y. -- No one was hurt after a fire Thursday morning in Westerlo.

The fire broke out at a house on Route 85 just before 5 a.m.

The fire chief says it started in the chimney, and that these type of fires are common this time of year.

"It’s warm during the day. People don’t want to let their stoves go out so they load it up on the morning, shut it down, go to work, come back, they’re home for a little while at night, they open it up, then they shut it down and go to bed. So you get a lot of creosote buildup especially this time of the year because they’re not burning the fires real hot so make sure your chimneys are clean,” said Westerlo Fire Department Chief Kevin Flensted.

The chief says it took them about 15 minutes to knock the fire down.

Around 20 firefighters responded and crews say the home suffered minimal damage.
