As the state considers Colonie's proposal to expand its landfill, two neighboring towns are raising concerns about water contamination.
The towns of Waterford and Halfmoon, along with advocacy group Riverkeeper, are calling for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to investigate the potential for PFOA.
Riverkeeper samples taken near the landfill show contamination as high as 519 parts per trillion. But water samples collected by Waterford and Colonie show much lower levels.
It's important to note these results did not come from a lab that's certified by the state.
This comes on the same day the DEC accepted Colonie's final environmental impact statement for the landfill expansion. The agency now has 10 days to decide whether or not it can move forward.
