SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A man is facing charges after police say he crashed into a Schenectady elementary school early Wednesday morning.
Schenectady police say Estevon Tirado drove through a large window and into a classroom at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School at 12:30 a.m.
Officers say Tirado then left the scene.
A short time later police spotted Tirado walking nearby and tried to arrest him, but he ran off.
One officer was injured while trying to take Tirado into custody.
The crash forced the school to close Wednesday.
Schenectady City School District Superintendent Larry Spring says he is thankful this did not result in any injuries to students.
"Their belongings are strewn about. We’re going to have to take some extra care with those kids and make sure we help them through that,” Spring said.
Tirado is facing several charges including, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and assault.
