TROY, N.Y. — Dustin Mele was a very outgoing person who loved to have fun. But more importantly, his family says he loved to help other people.

"He would give the shirt off his back if anyone needed it,” said Lindsay Mele, Dustin's sister.

But in 2013, they lost Dustin to suicide. He was 28.

While times were difficult, Dustin's family wanted to turn a loss into a cause. With the goal of raising awareness on suicide prevention, they decided to hold the Dustin Mele memorial concert.

“This gives me something to do," said Joe Mele, Dustin's father. "It keeps his name out there.”

On Saturday, the memorial concert went on for the fifth year in a row in Troy. It featured several local bands.

This year, money raised will help organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

“It makes me feel really good to give back and to turn a negative into positive,” Lindsay Mele said.

The Meles believe if they stay on track, about $65,000 will have been raised in the last five years. All of it will help those who may be struggling with their mental health.
