SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- After hearing from the public Friday morning, the Saratoga City Council voted unanimously to ban modern firearm shows from the City Center.

"It's time. It's a big problem in our country. We don't want anyone to die by assault rifles or any kind of guns. This is the first step in a long process," said Mayor Meg Kelly.

The longtime organizer of the event, David Petronis, chose not to attend the meeting, and says he knew this was coming in the wake of the latest school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

"I feel for all those kids who went through that tragic event. However, I think they are being used by liberal Democrats who don't want to let a tragic event go by without being utilized," Petronis said.

Petronis says the shows attract as many as 7,000 people and are a boon in sales tax and secondary spending for the city and county. He says he'll look to see if there are any other shows he could hold there.

"They didn't mention anything about antique guns," he said. "I guess we can have an antique gun show and focus more on history and millitaria."

The mayor says she is confident the measure would hold up in court.

"We knew what we were doing," Kelly said.

Petronis doesn't think he will seek legal action. A gun show that is scheduled for May will still go on and will be the last of its kind.
