EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. — New York State Police say two troopers are in serious but stable condition after being hit by a drunk driver on I-90 eastbound Sunday morning.

Authorities say 26-year-old Christopher Neumann of Castleton hit a State Police vehicle then the two troopers, who were pulled over with a tow truck trying to clear a car that had crashed into the median on I-90 in East Greenbush.

Neumann now faces multiple charges, including DWI and first-degree vehicular assault.

Police say both troopers, Shane Swartz and Brent Karow, were taken to Albany Medical Center along with a tow truck operator.

Troop G Commander Robert Patnaude says his troopers had the scene lit up with flares and emergency lights.

"We've been on the job a long time; the troopers are like our kids. We try to put them in the best position to keep them from getting hurt. It's an inherently dangerous job. We give them the vehicles, the lights, the vests, all the equipment we give them. But you can't protect against everything. In a case like this, they did everything right," said Patnaude.

Officials say the tow truck operator suffered a laceration to his head, but is expected to be OK.

Karow is a six-year veteran out of the Guilderland Barracks, and Swartz is a four-year veteran from the Brunswick Barracks. Both are 34 years old.
