ALBANY, N.Y. -- Police officers said goodbye to one of their own in Albany Tuesday. Funeral services were held for Albany Police Detective Kevin Meehan at St. Mary's Church.

The amount of people, from officers to firefighters, who attended Detective Meehan's funeral was a clear indication of just how impactful his passing is.

The funeral procession began at 9:30 a.m. Law enforcement and emergency personnel from all across the state, including NYPD and state troopers, were part of the procession toward St. Mary’s Church.

Detective Meehan was a member of the Albany Police Department for 13 years. He died February 21 after a long battle with cancer.

Before the funeral began, Acting Police Chief Robert Sears talked about the somber day ahead.

"When a brother in blue needs support, there's no distance someone won't go to support them," Sears said. "That says a lot, and we got a tremendous amount of support from the community as well, and we're just very grateful for all the support that we do receive.

"The most important thing for us is to let family know -- Crystal, his wife; Dan, his brother; his mom and dad -- that they’ll always be part of our family, regardless of what happens in the future.”
