SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union College was packed with ice skaters, headed to Messa Rink to raise money for epilepsy. But not everyone would have necessarily been on board with the fundraiser.

Alex Askenazy wasn't one for attention. Instead, he was focused on his studies and wanted to find a cure for epilepsy. But three months after his death, his friends decided they needed to hold a fundraiser for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy in honor of Askenazy.

"Alex was really big on bio-chemistry that's what he was studying here and one of his big dreams was to help discover a cure for epilepsy one day so that no other people would have to suffer like he was. We just wanted to do what we could to continue his goal and continue his dreams in whatever capacity we could," said Arielle Singer, Skate for Alex Committee chair.

On Sunday, they helped raise more than $6,500 by ice skating. That money will go towards finding a cure for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, which is what Askenazy died from.
