ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan continues to urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to include $12.5 million for the city in the state budget.

Now, the common council is reacting.

Sheehan sent a letter to the governor asking for the money, something common council members say they didn't know was happening.

In that letter, the mayor makes the argument that Albany does not receive as much funding as other cities.

The common council financial chair says that state funding makes up between 7 and 8 percent of its city budget. It's a point the mayor has made in the past, and one the finance chair also agrees with.

“So if you just look at the aid to municipalities it's patiently unfair per capita what we are getting. And then on top of that the amount of state tax exempt land we have in the city just disproportionately affects our taxpayers in the city of Albany," said 9th Ward’s Albany Common Councilor Judy Doesschate.

The finance committee has not decided what could potentially be cut if the city does not get the additional funding.
