UPDATE: After CEO Indra Nooyi's comments received serious backlash on social media, prompting a PepsiCo spokeswoman to shoot down the rumor of “Lady Doritos” Monday afternoon, Ad Age reported.

"The reporting on a specific Doritos product for female consumers is inaccurate," a spokeswoman stated in an emailed Monday evening to Ad Age. "We already have Doritos for women – they're called Doritos, and they're enjoyed by millions of people every day. At the same time, we know needs and preferences continue to evolve and we're always looking for new ways to engage and delight our consumers."

WORLDWIDE — Some women march for empowerment, some for equal rights, some for political change, but those marching for lady-friendly chips can hang it up, because your calls have been heard!

“Lady-friendly” Doritos chips will be smaller in size, “make less of a crunch noise,” and will be appropriately sized to “ fit inside a handbag.”

In a recent interview with New York radio show "Freaknonomics," host Stephen Dubner asked Doritos owner Indra Nooyi if her company is developing a "male and female version of chips." Nooyi responded:

“When you eat out of a flex bag — one of our single-serve bags — especially as you watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips, they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth, because they don’t want to lose that taste of the flavour, and the broken chips in the bottom … Women would love to do the same, but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavour into their mouth.”

As CEO of PepsiCo, Nooyi oversees more than a quarter-million global employees, and an empire that includes Frito-Lay, Tropicana and Gatorade. Forbes reports she is one of only 27 female CEOs currently leading Fortune 500 companies.

The internet, like most women receiving the news, has not been kind:

The company responded on Twitter monday seeming to indicate that the product may not be under development afterall.
