RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- A slick morning commute for the Capital Region led to a rescue effort in Rensselaer.

A mother was driving an SUV down Fowler Avenue onto 6th Street with her two teenagers inside. Police believe she slid on black ice, into a tree, nearly falling off the steep hill known in the city as the “Hollow.”

All three got out through the passenger door and slid down the hill.

The mom and one teen were saved by ATVs, and the other teen was rescued with a sled and ropes. The family suffered minor injuries, quickly making it to safety thanks to the first responders.

Around the same time, a van crashed in the same area.
