A Schenectady man who was convicted of intentionally setting his stepfather on fire was sentenced to 25 years to life behind bars.

Andrell Lepannen, 29, was convicted of second-degree murder for the incident in 2016.

The defense argued that due to a history of mental illness, Lepannen fell victim to his own vices.

"He was a stereotypical mental health patient not compliant with medical,” said public defender Stephen Signore. “Not acknowledging he had a mental health issue and that's not unique to him. That happens a lot. And you find that out with testimony for that reason, psychiatrist and people that were there to help him."

Officials said Lepannen threw gasoline on his 50-year-old stepfather before lighting him on fire.

The man was flown to the hospital and later died.
