With January being National Birth Defects Prevention Month, advocate groups are looking to spread some awareness.

Health experts have said 1 in 33 babies in the United States will be born with some sort of birth defect, so it's always important to take the proper steps both during and before pregnancy.

Sharon Chesna, the executive director of Mothers and Babies Perinatal network, says that since 50 percent of pregnancies are unplanned, it's always important to prepare.

"We want everyone to think, do you want to have children someday, and if you do, when might that be so that you really can be planning for those things,” said Chesna. “In that planning, they should be thinking about those things, even if it's a month from now or 6 months from now or a year from now."
