Salvatore Piazza of K-9 Services Unlimited in Frankfort has been training dogs for more than 35 years. After receiving several calls from people having aggression issues with pit bulls, he decided to make an offer.

"I told them, 'Take the dog back to wherever you got it. Whether it's a shelter, whether it's a breeder, take it back and I'll train your dog for free. Whatever breed you get next.' So I posted it online and people went crazy," said Piazza.

People instantly started sharing, commenting and reacting to the deal.

"I just can't believe that somebody that claims to be a professional trainer would say something like that," said dog owner Dave Olney.

Piazza said his offer is based on safety concerns.

"I've trained hundreds of them. I don't hate pit bulls," said Piazza. "There's something that has to be done. There's got to be laws passed where criminal background checks are done on these people."

However, the way Piazza is going about his beliefs is upsetting some dog owners.

Herkimer County Humane Society staff said they don't see breeds, they see dogs, but regardless, pit bulls don't stand out to them as a more aggressive breed. They said they work to help every dog behave.

"When they come in acting aggressive as most people would say, it's because they're scared. And once they realize it's OK, we've adopted out some very nice dogs of all breeds," said Missy Bennett of the Herkimer County Humane Society.

Herkimer County Humane Society members do not recommend returning a misbehaving pit bull to a local humane society as the first step. They say there are other options, like seeking a new trainer.

Piazza said he's just happy people are talking about the issue.

"I'm glad there's a discussion going on, even though they're hating me, and they're attacking me, whatever," he said. "I'm so glad there's a discussion going on because for all the people that are attacking me, I can show you many other posts where they're saying, 'Thank you so much.' "

Piazza said the post has since been taken down, but the offer still stands.
