SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Schenectady launched a new program Thursday in an effort to fight urban blight.

The H.O.M.E.S. [Home Ownership Made Easy in Schenectady] program partners local banks with prospective homeowners to make the process easier. The newest partnership with that program offers prospective homeowners up to $20,000 to rehab the house, a 30-year fixed mortgage and down-payment assistance.

The purpose of the program is to help low to middle income families buy abandoned or foreclosed homes, while still being able to afford the rehab costs associated with the properties.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Neighborhood Revitalization Program will help strengthen neighborhoods in Schenectady County. He said in part:

"This administration is focused on combatting zombie properties, which blight neighborhoods, drive down property values and add additional burdens to property taxpayers. By investing in the construction of safe, affordable homes, New York is restoring our communities, strengthening neighborhoods, and helping to ensuring homeownership remains within reach for all in Schenectady County and across this great state."

People interested are required to live in the house they take advantage of with the new state program, and there are generous income requirements.

The mayor says he is very excited for the new partnership.

“This will be a vital addition to the tools for us to continue our efforts to promote home ownership in our community and really message the opportunities that exist in our communities in the Capital Region,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy.

The program isn’t just for first time home buyers. Schenectady is hosting an open house on January 21 for some of the vacant, abandoned properties. For more details about program in Schenectady, visit: better-neighborhoods.org or call 518-372-6469.
