The city of Albany is again seeking $12.5 million from New York State to help balance its budget. It was not included in Governor Andrew Cuomo's budget presentation Tuesday.
Mayor Kathy Sheehan says Albany deserves extra help, as it hosts acres and acres of tax-exempt state property. The mayor says the city is doing everything Cuomo has called on municipalities to do, like streamlining services and paying taxes.
"I think that for the residents of the city for Albany, this is really a slap in the face," she said. "We are the Capital City. We are working hard right now today to ensure that streets are plowed and our city is safe for the thousands of people who come here to work in state government every day. We simply cannot continue to subsidize that expense and place all of that on the taxpayers and residents of the city of Albany."
Sheehan says she's hopeful this situation will be corrected in the governor’s 30-day budget amendments.
