The Troy community came out Saturday to remember three of the victims of the quadruple homicide on Second Avenue.

TROY, N.Y. -- Davine Bookman can still recall the first time he met 11-year-old Jeremiah "JJ" Myers. The two connected through basketball and spent many hours playing the game at the Taylor Apartments.

“I remember I used to have him running suicides and just me and him out there for hours," Bookman said. "I remember the first time I seen him play. He was so tiny but he was so good.”

On Saturday afternoon, Bookman was one of many that came to Troy Middle School to say their final goodbyes to JJ, his mother, 36-year-old Shanta Myers, and his sister, 5-year-old Shanise Myers.

“It was a lot of love in there, a little sad, a lot of love," said Jose Cepeda, a friend. "Everybody came to show love to the family and the community.”

The memorial service came just one day after James White and Justin Mann were arraigned on a 17-count indictment. Prosecutors say the two men murdered the Myerses and 22-year-old Brandi Mells last month.

“I’m still sad, mad that this happened to him because he was a fun kid to be around,” said Jamani White, a Troy Middle School student.

She went to school with JJ. White says he always made others laugh and smile.

“He used to tell jokes to everybody," White said. "He was like the class clown.”

As loved ones left the service with heavy hearts, they say the Troy community will continue to stand strong and support each other during these difficult times.

“It’s hurtful. Troy lost a lot of people, so this is more of an impact to us," Cepeda said. "But we’re all going to stay strong though.”
