ALBANY, N.Y. -- Six New Yorkers are heading to California to help those impacted by the devastating wildfires. Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Eastern New York will join two volunteers already on the ground.

According to the Red Cross, since August, more than 115 volunteers from our area have been deployed to disaster areas throughout the country.

"You get your phone call; 'Hey Bob, can you leave the next day?' And it's like, 'um, I think so' and you figure it out," said Bob Domanico, a Red Cross volunteer who is heading to California.

The work done in impacted communities takes an emotional toll, but those who do the work say it's worth it.

"You've got to be the strength for them so they can see that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It's a long tunnel, but it's there," said volunteer Ronald Schoonmaker.

The volunteers will stay in California for two weeks. Aside from other local missions, two Eastern New York volunteers are still assisting in Puerto Rico.
