CORINTH, N.Y. -- The community is remembering a mother and daughter killed in a house fire earlier this week. A vigil was held Wednesday night in Corinth for 39-year-old Tonya Slimmer and 15-year-old Briaunna Slimmer.

"She just takes the best and walked with it. She would always be happy and excited about everything," said Alexia Parker, who was friends with Briaunna. "You'd always see her with a smile on her face."

Briaunna and her mother Tonya were killed in a late morning fire on Monday in their home on Main Street. The news devastated this small community.

On Wednesday night, Parker and her mother were among the dozens attending a vigil as the community rallied to remember Briaunna and Tonya.

"Being a close-knit community as we are it was really nice to see that the community would come out and support this family and wrapped them in their arms," said friend Corina Parker.

Family and friends say Tonya was a mother to nine children. Briaunna ran cross country and sang in her school's chorus. Loved ones say both of them always gave back to the community.

"They're a wonderful family and she's a wonderful mom, a wife, just a beloved person of their community," said Tevye Valencia, a friend who helped organize the vigil.

Since the fatal fire, residents have donated several items at the First Methodist Church to help the father and the other children. Friends say the support has been overwhelming to a family going through a very difficult time.

"This community is a small community but they stick together," Valencia said.

Calling hours are scheduled for Friday. A memorial service will follow on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in the village.
